He was also very active in his local VFW chapter, serving as Chaplain at one point. Before the War he was a member of a C.C.C. Camp. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program for unemployed men, providing vocational training through the performance of useful work related to conservation and development of natural resources in the United States from 1933 to 1942. In his military records it says that during that time he was a first aid attendent and "dressed and treated minor cuts and bruises from which he kept records". |

| Although Daniel was very proud of being a member of E-Co he never spoke about his WWII experiences . Above his ribbons in a shadow box made by Frank Di Angelis . Among them The Good Conduct Medal, The Bronze Star (for heroic action), The WWII Victory Medal. |

| He also received the American Theater Ribbon and the European, African and Middle Eastern Ribbon with four bronze stars and one bronze arrow head. Left to right: Gary West, Susie West Moore, Daniel West, Jim West, Cathy West Brewster. Shortly after this picture was taken he was diagnosed with lung cancer. An Army FamilyDaniel has a younger brother still living (2009) in Kentucky, Bethel West,He enlisted in 1946 and served in all four branches of service, starting in the Army in Japan, then AirForce in Korea. He wanted to fly but the airforce required college which he didnt have so he went to the Marines and finally to the Navy for flight school. He was in the Navy during the Suez Canal Crisis. They also had an older half brother - Lewis West - who was in the 2nd Infantry Division and was a Ranger Frogman and was actually in the water on D-Day. He was on a ship called the Susuan B. Anthony and before he could swin back to the ship, it got hit so he had to swin back to the beach. |
